For the implementation of market principles in the daily activity of national economy sectors, includ-
ing health care, we should have objective arguments concerning the selection and planning of optimal
measures in order to improve public health-oriented priorities and measurable results. As an indica-
tor for sustaining the development priorities of health systems we increasingly use economic evidence
expressed equivalents. Thus, for these purposes there are often used mortality data, including the
working age population, with assessment of the Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL) indicator. In a
study conducted by us, during a year, with 15 651 deaths in working age group, it was established the
social and economic impact determined by high rates of mortality among the population. It has been
identified the non-uniform distribution of values of this indicator in the territories, the North and South
regions of the country having the highest indices (overall mortality) and lower in the Central region,
but the PYLL index rates through the regions indicate a reverse picture. Implementing the method of
calculating PYLL index, we established that the highest indices are found in younger age groups (24-50
years). Considering the results of the economic impact on the country because of PYLL in working age
population, it was established that these deaths have damaged the national economy in the amount of
$405, 85 million USD (or about 4.87 billion MDL).
