This paper is an overview over George Lakoff’s theory of conceptual metaphor which he developed together with Mark Johnson. Conceptual Metaphor Theory’s basic description of metaphor is comparable to received wisdom in philosophy and literary studies, and maybe regarded as a matter of common knowledge. Metaphors arise basically where one thing is defined in terms of another for rhetorical outcome. Nevertheless, this is as far as the correspondence goes. Being ‘contemporary’, ‘conceptual’, and a major support of the cognitive linguistics paradigm, CMT starts to argue for the relationship between the human cognition and the linguistic metaphors. |
