Historically, men and the term of masculinity/manhood was seen in many cultures and traditions as an act of showing power and violence. Since childhood, boys are taught to be aggressive and competitive, that a «real man» means being a provider for and protector of one’s family and community. Often being encouraged to use physical force in solving problems or any conflicts. Those boys who show interest in domestic tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, or caring for younger siblings, or who easily display their emotions, may be ridiculed by their families and peers, and seen as not “real men.” This could explain, in part, why boys are more likely than girls to be involved in violence, delinquent behavior, substance abuse, and family absenteeism. Therefore, the psycho social activities that we designed and adapt have the goal of expanding and including efforts aimed at stopping violence being perpetrated in the first instance - meaning children, especially boys, by teaching them about “what is this thing called gender” and how to avoid being trapped in the “box” of numerous stereotypes that usually dictate our behavior in numerous situations, parents and other community actors by showing them an alternative more positive way of coping with negative behaviors that may lead to violence or abuse. The proposed activities have the goal of developing essential abilities that will lower the use of violence, abuse, or other self-destructive behavior usually adopted by men and boys and to find other approach, such as: managing one’s own emotions and expressing them in a more healthy way, understanding the role of gender, building healthy relationships, being more engaged in family and community life. |
