Rezumat

This paper presents a theoretical overview of the phenomenon English for Specific Purposes (ESP). ESP has developed and became a part of English language teaching which should be taught of as a different approach to language learning in order to meet learner’s particular professional or occupational language needs. In the global context, students at engineering institutions need a specific set of language skills for their success in education and in career. Language classes at this higher level always make use of the texts of specific professional areas (art, business, civil engineering, computer). Such texts are usually focused on the communicative needs of the learners. English for Engineering is an example of English for Science and Technology and its history is the one of EST which on the other hand is closely related to English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Hence, there were made many attempts to focus on English for Specific Purposes and English for Science and Technology (EST). Most of the work in the 1960s was in the area of English for Science and Technology (EST) and for some time ESP and EST were regarded as almost synonymous (Hutchinson & Waters). An engineer's need for communicating his ideas and views makes him find special words-jargon, likewise a doctor needs a different range of words to speak about the patients health. This is ESP, which we do not use on our daily basis. The words that we use in our ordinary discussions take on a different meaning in Technical English.
