Rezumat

The first Romanian sunflower hybrids were created by Vrânceanu Alexandru-Viorel and his team at the Research Institute for Cereal and Industrial Crops from Fundulea (in the present National Agricultural Research and Development Institute from Fundulea), and they were tested starting with 1968 by the State Commission for Variety Testing and Homologation from Romania (in the present State Institute for Variety Testing and Registration). The two sunflower hybrids were registered in 1971 in the Romanian Official Catalogue of the Varieties of Plant Species with the names of Romsun 52 and Romsun 53, and they were based on nuclear male sterility. These two sunflower hybrids opened the period of the “hybrid sunflower” in Romania and they were followed by creation and homologation of the sunflower hybrids based on cytoplasmic male sterility. The next two sunflower hybrids were registered in 1974, while in the period 19751995, the number of the sunflower hybrids registered for cultivation in Romania varied between 4 and 13. In the period 1996-2006, the number of registered sunflower hybrids started to increase significantly, respectively it increased from 15 in 1996 to 118 in 2006. In 2007, the year when Romania entered the European Union, the number of the registered sunflower hybrids decreased to 83, but starting with 2008 the number of the registered sunflower hybrids started to increase again significantly up to 280 in 2015. In the years 2016 and 2017, the number of the sunflower hybrids registered for cultivation in Romania was of 265. Practically, starting with 2012, in Romania there was registered to be cultivated a number of sunflower hybrids more than 200. For a more realistic picture, it has to be taken into account, respectively it has to be added the sunflower hybrids homologated in one of the EU countries which can be cultivated in Romania as an EU country and which are put on the Romanian market by several companies.
