Aim of the study: to assess parental knowledge and abilities regarding child health. Materials and methods: the study was conducted to assess the Healthy Child Development and Monitoring Standards in Ambulatory settings with support from UNICEF Moldova and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Moldova. One of the goals of the study was to assess the knowledge and abilities of parents in raising a healthy child. Special questionnaires were developed in order to interview parents/caregivers of children aged 0 to 18 years from the Chisinau and Balti municipalities, and districts of Drochia, Cahul and Hincesti. Results: the study revealed a low level of parental skills in early identification of diff erent changes in the health of children. Thus, in the general group only one out of 5 caregivers is able to mention at least 3 signs of danger for the child’s life when he requires immediate medical attention; only 2.5% of parents were able to list all five signs. Analysis of parental responses revealed deficiencies in the issue of first aid in case of an emergency, for example when the child has fever – parents were not able to explain about physical methods of decreasing fever, mentioning mostly antipyretic drugs. In the mean time, only one-third of parents know what is the first aid when the child has diarrhea and/or vomiting. Conclusions: poor knowledge and parental skills regarding the signs of danger to the child’s life and health and first aid measures lead to late identification of child health problems and delayed medical assistance. The refore, it is necessary to implement effective methods to improve parental skills regarding the good practice and child growth and development (discussions, trainings, mass media, informative leaflets, and other). |
