Rezumat

This article ascertains that the strength of the national identity of the Romanian people over the centuries was a primordial factor that contributed to the realization of the national ideal of unity of all Romanians. This identity force manifested itself during the achievement of the Romanian national state, in “steps” representing the Union of the Principalities, in 1859, Independence, in 1877-1878, the Kingdom in 1881, the Autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in 1885 and the Great Union in 1918. The accomplishment of Modern Romania wore the mark of a fervent national credo. The first day of national celebration for Romanians was January 24, which meant the realization of the Small Union in 1859. After 1989, 1 December became the national day of the Romanians, but January 24 was also preserved as a national holiday
