Rezumat

In this study there is a retrospective of the historical evolution of the Romanian people, starting with the antique period of Burebista and Decebal, continuing with the medieval and modern era of the creation of the Romanian states and ending with the present situation of the Romanian nation in the year when it is fulfilled 100 years of the Great Union. During the long process of ethnogenesis of the Romanians, local communities formed in more or less extensive territorial units, but they were unable to create states in the Carpatho-Danubian space in its entirety. On the other hand, outside the Carpathian arch, in favourable circumstances, Wallachia and Moldavia were formed. Although separated from the Carpathian Mountains, the Romanians have maintained permanent connections, and Mihai Viteazul made a first attempt to restore the old Dacia. The achievement of the Union of Principalities of 1859 and the Great Union of 1918 was possible due to favourable geopolitical circumstances, but the Romanian people had a decisive role in the progress of the events, until had the luck to beneficiate from the military and diplomatic actions of the great actors on the world political scene. During the communist regime, prominent personalities from Transylvania, Bessarabia and Bucovina, who had a decisive role during the historical events of 1918, suffered and were repressed in the prisons in Romania or the USSR. The reunification of the majority of the Romanians on the left of the Lower Danube within the borders of a national state in 1918 was beneficial for the efficiency of intellectual and material resources, which led to an ascendant course of the evolution of the Romanian nation.
