This article reflects the works of different authors who see translation from the perspective of cultural interference, and sustain the idea that the translator has become more than a simple ferryman, but an intercultural expert. The content will also focus on the mediating role and cultural awareness of the translator in the process of translation. The last part of the material will emphasize a contrastive and comparative analysis of culture specific items related to proper names, used in Spiridon Vangheli’s work Isprăvile lui Guguță translated by Miriam Morton. According to this analysis, an important thing that should be taken into account for assuring a faithful, correct and clear translation is that a translator must have a wide cultural background of the target and source languages, and use the right translation strategies within this process
