Background. Stroke in children represents is a major neurological emergency, being a principal cause of morbidity and mortality. It is determined during the neonatal period in one of 2500 – 4000 live born, and in 1,2 to 8 per 100000 children aged over one month. The aim of the study is to develop the national clinical protocol of stroke management for children. Material and methods. The present study was based on the data from the special literature of the area and on the international clinical protocols of stroke management for children. Results. The therapeutic approach of stroke in children is based on stroke recognition, revaluation and continuously registering of vital signs and neurological status within the first 6 hours. Stroke in children can manifest atypically, and in one third to one fi fth cases is accompanied by seizures, causing the necessity to monitor the seizure status using the clinical protocol indicated in such cases. In small children sometimes stroke is accompanied by motor problems, and disorders of speech and sensitivity. Stroke during pregnancy or immediately after birth can manifest without the marked symptoms. In the newborn with stroke clinical symptoms may be subtle or stroke may be asymptomatic until the age of 4 – 8 months. Sometimes can be noted seizures or motor paralysis, frequently on the one side of the body. As a result, many children from high risk group not receiving adequate treatment. Conclusions: The national clinical protocol will help improving the knowledge of specialists in the field for stroke management in children of different ages to prevent development of neurologic complications.. |
