The number and variety of dictionaries, glossaries and encyclopedias of literary, stylistic and poetic terms have greatly increased recently. It is also becoming clear that terminology is a specific branch of lexicology –specific, because it is concerned with conventional semiotic system and not ordinary language as spontaneously arising out of the needs of natural human communication. New concepts have spread over the world and become familiar with many terms that name them. Not only the scientists are interested in studying the terms and terminology but also the students, teachers, translators and theorists of translation. The concepts constituting the theory are not original, but as it is in other interdisciplinary subjects, they are borrowed from the neighboring disciplines, in this case those are: linguistics, logics, ontology, philosophy, etc. If we accept that terms constitute a subcomponent of the lexicon of the language, since speaker’s competence cannot exclude a specialized vocabulary, the terminology clearly forms a part of linguistics. From the point of view of its base material, we can consider the terms, whereas, the terminology is also a part of applied linguistics. However, terminology doesn’t make use of all linguistic concepts, it chooses according to its objectives and any type of terminology doesn’t operate with a limited number of concepts from the same branch, even the prime object of the study is the specialized words occurring in natural language which belong to specific domains of the usage. Even though, the autonomy of terminology as an independent discipline, has been disputed, and we accept that the terminology is a field with its own theoretical principles and its own applied purposes. |
