Rezumat

Françoise takes an important place in the Proustian novel, both from the aesthetic and the linguistic perspectives. As a heroine, Françoise stands out for being present in all parts of the novel, from Combray to the final epiphany in Time regained. Being a mixture of old French (patois) influenced by the writings of La Bruyère and Madame de Sévigné, of personal creations and faults (that Proust names by cuirs), her language represents a cornerstone of the French spirit, theme that crosses the novel from its beginning to the end. This article underlines how and to what extent Françoise’s cuirs, those that put flavour into her character and into the Proustian French, were translated in the two Romanian versions offered by Radu Cioculescu and Irina Mavrodin. Are humour and surprise in the character’s interventions kept in the Romanian translations? And if so, what translating procedures made easy the passage of the French spirit from one language to another?
