The current paper addresses the issue of the phenomenon of literary translation from the point-of-view of the indirect translation technique, namely, the modulation, which is an essential translation method. It entails a change from the perspective of translating from language A – the source language – into language B – the target language. We will analyse the mechanisms through which the modulation as a literary translation technique works at the level of the lexical unit, of the phrase, or even at sentence level. We will highlight the fact that one or more words in the target language, studied from a semantic and rhetorical perspective, correspond to some series of words which belong to various regions in the source language these being translated by means of the modulation technique. We will discuss the modulation method in relation to synonymy and emphasize the multiplicity of the solutions of translation into the target language. |
