Starting with the new millennium different lines of research and theoretical reasoning are gradually building, in a synergetic manner, a new and emergent social psychology of culture. The main scope of the presentation is to show how this host of social psychological perspectives reshapes the way culture, multiculturalism and cultural identities are understood and investigated. First, some historical roots of the social psychological approach toward culture are discussed. Second, a series of newly advanced theoretical and empirical contributions that reflects a social psychological standing are briefly outlined and analyzed. It is shown that besides having different names – e.g., situated cognition perspective, dynamic constructivist approach, descriptive norm approach, intersubjective culture perspective, cultural dynamics – and sometimes slight disagreements, all of them are depicting a truly social and psychological account of cultural phenomena. Finally, some new insights on prospective directions for researching the multicultural mind and identities within the social psychology of culture are advanced. |
