Aim of the study: to estimate risk factors and barriers in reducing mortality level in children under-5 with pneumonia in the Republic of Moldova. Materials and methods: the study included data obtained by the evaluation of 177 cases of children treated with acute community-acquired pneumonia, aged from 29 days to 5 years. Analysis also included data from confidential audit of 44 cases of death caused by pneumonia in the period 2013-2014 in the district hospitals of the country. In order to estimate the role of medico-social risk factors for under-fi ve mortality in children caused by acute respiratory infections in Moldova were used questionnaires and statistical methods of data analysis (ANOVA, t-Student, RR) and EpiInfo 7.1.5.2 software. Results: the study showed that in half of the cases children deceased at home, having normal ante- and perinatal history (good birth weight, Apgar score higher than 7 points (χ2 = 3.84; p<0.05). The study confirmed again the fact that deaths of children under the age of 5 years at home are caused by a broad spectrum of medical and social risk factors. Amongst them, an obviously negative has the following: low educational level of parents, alcohol consumption by family members, and lack of knowledge of disease signs in case of illness at the child (p<0.05). Conclusions: thus, about 87.8% of the deaths that occurred in children under 5 years caused by pneumonia could be avoided. |
