Erectile dysfunction is an important problem affecting millions of men worldwide. The interest in the causes and methods of treatment of erectile dysfunction has evolved with mankind, and the conception of the problem has changed in parallel with the socio-economic development of society. The paper presents the evolution of the methods of erectile dysfunction treatment from antiquity to the present day. For centuries, treatment methods have been limited to the use of natural medicine, and sporadic surgical trials were doomed to failure. Surgical methods of treating erectile dysfunction have grown in the early 20th century and culminated with penile prosthesis with inflatable prostheses.  The promoter of the modern revolution in sexology was the Virag who discovered the induction of erection by intracavernoid administration of vasoactive substances. One of the most remarkable achievements in 20th century medicine has been the discovery of the Sildenafil citrat (Viagra) preparation, which allows the treatment of male sexual dysfunctions only by the use of pills. The efficacy of treatment methods for erectile dysfunction is about 90% at present and, to make it even bigger, research continues with the involvement of tissue engineering or genetics.  

Disfuncția erectilă este o problemă importantă de sănătate care afectează milioane de bărbați la nivel mondial. Interesul faţă de cauzele şi metodele de tratament ale disfuncţiei erectile a apărut odată cu omenirea, iar concepţiile despre problemă s-au modificat concomitent cu dezvoltarea socio-economică a societăţii. În lucrare se prezintă evoluţia metodelor de tratament a disfuncţiei erectile începând cu perioadă antichităţii până în zilele noastre. Timp de secole, metodele de tratament s-au limitat la utilizarea medicinii naturiste, iar încercările sporadice de tratament chirurgical erau sortite eşecului. Metodele chirurgicale de tratament al disfuncţiei erectile au luat amploare la începutul secolului al XX-lea şi au culminat prin protezarea peniană cu proteze gonflabile.  Promotorul revoluţiei moderne în sexologie a fost chirurgul francez Virag care a descoperit inducerea erecţiei prin administrarea intracavernoasă a substanţelor vasoactive. Una din cele mai remarcabile realizări în medicina secolului al XX-lea a fost descoperirea preparatului Sildenafil citrat (Viagra), care permite tratamentul disfuncţiilor sexuale masculine doar prin utilizarea pastilelor. Eficienţa metodelor de tratament a disfuncţiei erectile la ora actuală este de circa 90%, iar pentru ca ea să fie mai mare cercetările continuă cu implicarea ingineriei tisulare sau a geneticii.
