În opera lui Ion Creangă spiritul răuvoitor manifestă un grad sporit de familiaritate, în care apare imaginea unui diavol ce nu mai sperie pe nimeni, chiar dacă se manifestă printr-o prezenţă concretă. Această imagine căpătă noi înţelesuri, care se limitează doar la aspecte ce ţin de prostia şi naivitatea drăcească, spulberând, totodată, mitul demonic ce inspiră spaima şi groaza. Naratorul prezintă incursiunea diavolului în lumea celor vii nu cu scopul de a ispiti, ci, mai degrabă, de a-l iscodi pe om. Spre deosebire de diavolul teologiei sau cel al Evului Mediu, acesta este prezentat drept un personaj neputincios şi inofensiv, când diferitele manifestări ale spiritului imun contribuie la definirea imaginii unui diavol ce nu mai inspiră spaima şi groaza, ci este ridiculizat şi luat în derâdere.

In Creanga’s work the malevolent spirit manifests an increased level of familiarity, in which we see the image of a Devil who does not scare anyone, even if it is being shown through a concrete presence. This image actually gains new understandings, being limited only to its nature, regarding evil foolishness and naivety, destroying in the same time the devil’s myth which inspires fear and horror. The narrator presents the devil’s incursion in the world of the living not with the purpose of tempting, but more like to spy the man. Unlike the devil from the theology or the one from the medieval times, this one is being represented as a powerless and harmless character, where the various shapes of the human spirit contribute to the defining of the devil’s image, of the one which does not inspire fear and horror, but of one ridiculed and humiliated.
