Proverbs like any other folklore genre reflect the life and the changing conditions of the people over the centuries. The purpose of this paper is to analyze English proverbs, their proper use, and the main methods of translating such as different forms of equivalence, analogy, calques or loan translation, descriptive translation, antonymic translation and combined translation. The author tries to figure out the most effective way of translating English proverbs into Romanian and to find the most suitable Romanian equivalent of certain English proverb. The author analyzes a variety of difficulties that could appear or arise in the translational process of the given category of “text”. Besides, the author mentions and studies the universal character of proverbs, presenting examples in the both mentioned languages, English and Romanian.
