The Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a notion that has been recently accepted in paediatrics, being submitted to many controversies. The MS presupposes a group of risk factors, including: central obesity, atherogenic dyslipidemia, arterial hypertension and a high-glycemic load. The main criteria used in diagnosing MS in the paediatric population are proposed by WHO (1999), NCEP-ATP III (2001), I DPAIA (2005) and IDF (2007). The diversity of criteria for each of the risk factors characterising MS makes it difficult to determine its unitary, overall prevalence. A simple definition of MS, a diagnostic tool in the clinical practice, which could be used comparatively easily in any country by any medical practitioner in order to identify the persons with an increased risk in developing type 2 diabetes (T2D), and other associated diseases is necessary. |
