Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy that begins in the basal cells. it can be caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight. Genetic factors are believed to predispose patients to BCC. Recently, there have been advances in the understanding of the genetics of BCC. There is the evidence that mulfunctioning of hedgehog (HH) signalling pathway and gene PTCH1 mutation increase the risk BCC development. The other genes implicated in BCC’s development are: tumor suppressor gene P53 and the melanocortin – 1 receptor. In addition, the following genes may predispose patients to sporadic BCC: glutathione – S-transferase gene, DNA repair gene XRCC3, cyclin – dependent kinase inhibitor genes CDKN2A and CDKN2B, basal keratinocyte keratin K5 gene and BRM gene. |
