As an intellectual with democratic views, Alexandru Boldur welcomed the Russian Revolution of February 1917, in hope of establishing on the enormous spread of the Russian Empire of a federal state with a democratic organization and functioning, within which for Bessarabia his reserved a status of administrative autonomy. According to Boldur, state organizational model was counterproductive and even dangerous to his native province. By assuming the role of subject of federation, Bessarabia apparently would win – getting perhaps more leeway – but by weakening the connection with the center, automatically, it would had created the danger of being absorbed by Ukraine, which showed annexation pretentions. Bolshevik coup d’état diverted the natural course of Russian evolution. After the Bolsheviks seized power, federal and democratic future of Russia was compromised, Russia remained in continuity in captivity of the Mongolian despotism. In this context, Alexandru Boldur welcomed the establishment of the Country’s Council Sfatul Ţării and the proclamation of the Moldavian Democratic Republic (December 2nd, 1917). If initially, the historian and professor in state law expressed the opinion that, following the Russian Revolution, Bessarabia is offered a perspective of prosperous development, which will gradually lead to overcoming the status of a colony, which it had within the Russian Empire, then, under the pressure of events in late 1917 – early 1918, this opinion was revised, Alexandru Boldur opting for the perspective of development of the natal province within the Romanian state. |
