Rezumat

Taking into consideration the peculiar and complex form of expression of the intercultural communication, the translated work performs new functions within the visited cultural area, fosters the appearance of / preference for certain literary genres, shapes the profile of the target culture, whilst equally acting on behalf of the discourse that accompanies the translation. At first, we focus on the early nineteenth century translations into Romanian and their role in the configuration of the modern Romanian language and the literature. The discourse of the translators of that time, on whose few examples we have built our study, reflects the difficulties that the act of translation raised at the time, as well as the translators’ hesitation in introducing concepts designating new realities. Among the most translated French authors of the nineteenth century, A. de Lamartine and Victor Hugo stand out as the most representative ones, and it is the Romanian versions of the latter’s work that we use as corpus for the study of the relationship to the Other in the act of translating. From the nineteenth century to the present day, the views of the Romanian translators regarding the work of Victor Hugo have been circumscribed to different frameworks of mind that correspond to the diverse stages of evolution of the dialects of opening and closing the modern Romanian culture which we intend to reconstitute throughout our research. Besides paratexts due to translators, the comparative analysis of translations provides us with illustrative data for intercultural contact approaches within the Romanian space, from the early nineteenth century until today.
