Besides the linguistic dimension, which is of great importance when coming in contact with the Other, intercultural communication raises the issue of grasping, being aware of understanding and accepting the differences and the diversity of cultural codes and social rituals, contact, meeting and exchange are a priori influenced by the perceptions and representations that each builds about the Other. The intercultural matter is solidly linked to the concept of culture, namely to the relationship established between individuals and culture, which actually construct both collective and individual identity, which, together, talk to each and provide answers, which argue and are interwoven. Social psychology studies have proved that the alterity is greatly influenced by stereotypes, judgements / ideas received that give rise to “cultural complexes” (minority vs majority, suburb vs centre). We do not define ourselves only by social differences (or age, gender or professional one), or even by cultural difference (related to language or word lookout), but mostly by confrontation – the stage for possible emotional, intellectual anxiety, maybe even drama or tragedy. We set out to prove that intercultural interaction is synonymous to alien and alienation, that intercultural communication is defined by being open towards the Other or not, by the antagonistic difference and tolerant assimilation. |
