THE RISE OF EUROSKEPTICISM AND RADICALISM IN GERMANY – „THE ALTERNATIVE FOR GERMANY” IN THE POLITICAL CONTEXT In 2013, a new party emerged on the German political scene – Alternative for Germany (AfD), with the aim to challenge the longtime pro-European dictum of German politics. Meanwhile, it is rather perceived as a party challenging another maxim of German politics, namely that there should be no democratic party right of the conservative CSU. The disputes how to label the AfD will continue as the party is still in the phase of a programmatic and personal consolidation, but the party itself admitted that being euroskeptic in Germany is not enough to succeed politically. The implosion of AfD earlier this year was seen as the end of the party, but paradoxically it turned into an advantage when Germany was hit by a migrant crisis of an unprecedented magnitude. Purified of the moderate, economically liberal euroskeptic wing, the AfD can now exploit the anxiety of worried Germans. On the other hand, with its shift to the right, the party definitely confirmed its Koalitionsunfähigkeit (unacceptability for coalitions), increasing the chances of Christian and Social Democrats to continue their Grand coalition after the federal election in 2017. |
