According to a certain tradition, the author of the Comédie humaine is reduced to the stage of “father of realism”, his inclinations towards the fantastic being considered as impermanent whims or upshots of romanticism. Thus, the occasional reader is furthermore amazed to come across the information that Balzac had a soft spot for occult sciences – an aspect confirmed by the novel Louis Lambert, among others, which is, equally, a philosophical study and a mystical story. The present paper is aimed at retracing the roots of mystical and magic syncretism of Balzac’s works, insisting upon the philosophical status of the author as well as upon the ideas originated in the great mystical trends of 18th century, i.e. Swedenborgism and Martinism. The current approach is subsequently intended to be a different study of a classic writer whose work uses the fantastic element to express a specific philosophy, no matter if the latter is his or someone else’s. |
