Rezumat

The 1923 Constitution represented a benchmark in the evolution of the relation between the State and the Orthodox Church as well as between the latter and other denominations. Also called the „Constitution of Union”, it was issued on the 28th of March, and made reference to confessionaland minority issues. Its importance also resided in the fact that it regulated the relations of the Orthodox Church with other orthodox churches outside Romania, deciding that it maintained its unity with the Eastern Ecumenical Church in what concerned dogmas. Our study presents the debates organised on the project of the 1923 Constitution. They bring to the fore the opinions of influential ecclesiastical and secular personalities of Romanian society between the two World Wars such as Miron Cristea, Nicolae Bălan, Onisifor Ghibu, Ion Mateiu, Ioan Lupaş, Nicolae Iorga, Nae Ionescu, Ion C.Brătianu. Specialists in church and state law rallied their opinions in this debate. Even if the provisions of the 1923 Constitution did not satisfy the uncompromising side of the Orthodoxy, its frame generated the new patterns along which the ancient Orthodox Church was to develop during the turbulent period between the two World Wars.
