The particularities of right-sided infective endocarditis
Right-sided infective endocarditis (RS IE) is considered to be the isolated lesion of the
tricuspid valve and/or the pulmonary valve. RS IE develops only in 5 - 10% cases, affecting
most frequently the young men. Although the RS IE is mainly considered to be the disease of
intravenous drug users (IVDU), it can develop in non-IVDU population, mainly in patients with
congenital heart disease (tetralogy of Fallot, VSD), pacemaker bearers, prolonged maintenance of intravenous catheters, skin and gynecological infections, especially in people with comorbidity. RS IE develops acutely with fever syndrome, destructive pneumonia, lung abscess, moderate changes in cardiac auscultation, which may lead to diagnostic errors in favor of pneumonia. |
