The great scholar D.Cantemir showed his erudition in several cultural and
knowledge fields, including the eastern music domain. His scientific and artistic works became well-known in the whole world only after his death. One of the first contacts of the western culture with the creation of D.Cantemir occurred through music. In 1714, in Paris is printed the literary work entited Dervish Aria, attributed to D.Cantemir, and over half a century in the work of the German composer Ch.W.Gluck Piligrimme Die von Mekka (1764) was noticed a melodic figure similar to that one used in Dervish Aria. The western music is present as well in the works of the Austrian composer Mozart.
Romanian and foreign researchers have tried to establish a link between the Abduction from the Seraglio and Air Dervish, the latter being attributed to D. Cantemir and considered the inspiration for the first and last act of Mozart's opera. Historical records do not provide information that Mozart would have known the authentic oriental music or one written by Cantemir, while in the creation of both composers there were similar melodic formulas found in the two mentioned studies. Based on the reassessment of previous studies, but also on new materials, the author has attempted to provide additional arguments which would enable to highlight the relationship between the musical activity of the Prince of Moldova and the master of Salzburg.
The musical and artistic work of Cantemir became known in Azerbaijan, Persia,
Syria, Turkey, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, etc. The fact that his music through two great composers of the time – Ch.W. Gluck and W.A.Mozart – is known in oriental music and inspired by it proves one indisputable fact: the flow of values based not only on the west-east, but in the opposite direction.
The present study is to suggest the idea that through his musical creation, D.
Cantemir establishes a bridge between East and West. |
