The present article touches upon the Story “A Soldier from La Ciotat” (“Der Soldat von La Ciotat”) by Bertold Breht. This story is about the monument of a simple soldier of the French army in a small French town in the south of France. The unusuality of this monument lies in the fact that it, the monument, is represented by an alive man. This alive monument suffers the needs as the father of the family. And this made him become an alive monument and beg. In order to be more attractive at his “ duty” he coloured himself with bronze colour. Bertold Breht depicts this soldier as a victim both of the war and of the social injustice; during all wars from the prehistoric times up to nowadays the soldier was (and is) considered the main hero. But in everyday life he is humiliated. The author uses different artistic methods to show the cinism and indifference of the government. In order to describe the main hero more vividly the writer uses the technique of parasynonymy. The
author finishes his story by questions which will never be answered. |
