Rezumat

Republic of Moldova had declared its independency from the former USSR now 22 years ago. But the existing level of electricity andnatural gas import dependency, respectively of more than 70% and almost 100%, reduces dramatically the ability of R. Moldova to achieve its independent economic and political development. In the year 2010, R. Moldova joined the Energy Community and in 2011 Moldova got engaged into the binding process of integration into the European market for electricity and natural gas. Until today, Moldovan gas market is being monopolised by a single natural gas supplier and operator. The excessive increase in the past years of the natural gas import prices, lack of supply routes and (re)sources diversification, the share of natural gas in country’s fuel and energy mix, all together necessitate the need for R. Moldova to urgently look for viable and reliable solutions in order to avoid worsening of already heavily damaged economical, but also political situation in the country. On August 27, 2013, R. Moldova launched construction of the first import gas pipeline project from the western sources: Iashi-Ungeni. This project has exceptional political and economic importance for the country and caused numerous contradictory views in the local society regarding its need and feasibility, but also future influence on country’s development. Herein as follows, the results of the performed extensive analysis will be presented in order to bring some additional light on the Iasi-Ungeni gas pipeline project, but also on the general natural gas market developments in R. Moldova and regionally.
