According to the Slavonic-Romanian chronicles from the XV-XVI-th centuries, Stephen the Great fell from the horse during a battle, in 1486. Similar episodes, narrating the fall of the sovereign are met also in the historical literature from the Romanian Principalities, South-Eastern Europe, and mediaeval Russia. The sovereign’s fall from the horse represented a literary stereotype, expressing the humiliating defeat, the capitulation before the enemy. The study analyzes the material circumstances, the symbolical logic and the significations contained by this image. The motif of the fall belongs to a wider subject – the horseman and the horse, as heroes of the folklore and of the mediaeval scholar literature. |
