The mere knowledge of two or more foreign languages does not necessarily elicit the ability to translate from or into them. This can be obtained only by gaining specialized
knowledge and by practicing within the field. Translation implies a very hard work; therefore, the translator is rightfully called "a word hunter" and the translation is justly considered a "Sisyphus work". The effect of a badly chosen word may sometimes be catastrophic and irreparable; that's why practice is very important in translation, being the only way in which the translation techniques and procedures can be learned. Due to the lack of specialized studies, the journalists who claim themselves to be translators may become some mediators who betray the trust of those consumers who rely on their honesty. Besides the linguistic knowledge, a translator must also have historic,
sociocultural, ethnocultural and semiotic knowledge. |
