Peripheral stigmata in patients with infectious endocarditis
on prosthetic valve, case study
Infectious endocarditis (IE) is a microbial infection with an insidious or sudden onset that involves the endocardium of the ventricles, atria or septal defects.According to European Guidelines the incidence of IE varies between 1.9 to 6.2 cases per 100,000 persons / year and the mortality is 20 to 25%. The characteristic lesion of IE is represented by vegetation situated on the heart valves 77.7-82.5%,but it can be also diagnosed on chordae tendineae, papillary muscles, ventricular and atrial endocardium, atrial or ventricular septal defects etc. Endocarditis on prosthetic valves (EIVP) is a complication of valve surgery registered in 1-6% . By convention, PVE is divided into „early PVE” denoting infection occuring within 1 year after valve replacement, or „late PVE” denoting infection more than 1 year after valve replacement. Approximately 10 to 25% of patients with infectious endocarditis have cutaneous or peripheral manifestations, caused by severe generalized infection. |
