From all family roles prescribed by Victorian domestic ideology, the role of the father was the most debated one, mainly because paternity underwent a fundamental transformation during the second half of the nineteenth century. Both the attitudes towards fatherhood and the paternal ideal shifted markedly, causing the decline of the patriarchal authority of middle-class men in the home and their subsequent alienation from it. The decline of paternal authority led to the emergence of two prevailing stereotypes of the Victorian father: the stern father stereotype and the stereotype of the absent father. The present article aims at exploring these stereotypes, especially the former, which was stronger and more persistent than the latter, particular attention being drawn to the factors that contributed to their appearance. Consequently, it provides a detailed description of the dominant stereotypes revolving around the Victorian father, which reveal much more about the fears and concerns of English society associated with paternity than about the actual fathering behaviour of Victorian men. Above all, the study carried out in this paper is valuable as one of the two dimensions of the comparative analysis between fictional characters and their corresponding stereotypes, being useful in determining the extent to which Victorian writers adopted the stereotypical perspective in the construction of paternal figures |
