Background. Tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are the second leading cause of malignancy in children after leukemia, 85% of them are intracranial. Embryonal tumors are the most common and represent 25% of all CNS tumors in children. Objective of the study. To study the features of the evolution of brain tumors depending on histology, localization and age. Material and Methods. The study is based on the analysis of the surgical treatment of brain tumors in children aged 0-18 years, admitted to the neurosurgery department of IMC during the 2019-2021 years. Results. The study group consisted of 51 children: 12 children up to 3 years, 39 children more than 3 years old, 30 (59%) of which were boys and 21(41%) were girls. Based on the localization, prevails the infratentorial tumors – 24 (47%) and supratentorial tumors - 20(39%). The histology revealed the predominance of medulloblastomas 17 (33%) and astrocytomas 14 (27%). The treatment was complex: surgical, radiotherapeutic and chemotherapeutic. Of the 51 cases, 45 - underwent surgery, 23 - total tumor ablation, 22 – subtotal tumor ablation, 6 were inoperable. Conclusion. Early diagnosis, application of multimodal treatment that includes the combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, provide a better prognosis and improved quality of life. |
