Occult hepatitis B virus infection in association with asthma bronchiale
Occult HBV infection is a clinical entity characterised by the detection or the absence of
HBV-DNA in serum and/or the detection of HBV-DNA in liver without appreciation of hepatitis
B surface antigen (HBsAg) [21]. Occult HBV infection has been described not only in patients
who have resolved an acute or chronic HBV infection but also in patients without any serological
markers of a past HBV infection. Occult HBV may impact in several different clinical context,
including and its acute reactivation when an immunosuppressive status occurs. There is little
information about extrahepatic manifestations of occult HBV infection. Low levels of HBV
replication have been detected in a number of extrahepatic tissues, including peripheral blood
mononuclear cells, raising the possibility that serum HBV DNA in occult hepatitis B infection
reflects non-hepatic replication, as in lymph nodes, kidney, heart, thyroid, pancreas, lung
[13,14,19]. Our study resulted in a high frequency of occult hepatitis B virus infection with
asthma. |
