Surgical menopause is associated with endocrine changes and alteration in bone metabolism which contributes to decreased bone mineral density (BMD), increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures, significantly affecting the quality of life of these patients. The aim of the study was to estimate BMD changes in women with surgical menopause of reproductive and premenopausal age. A prospective observational study was performed. The study included 30 women with surgical menopause: 27 with hysterectomy without ovarectomy and 3 with bilateral ovarectomy (mean age 43.6 ± 3.7 years). BMD was assessed by the DXA method - dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at the hip joint. The results of the study showed that 86.7% of enrolled patients had BMD within the norm and 13.3% - low BMD (estimated as Z ≤ -2.0 score). At one postoperative year, 60% had normal BMD, 33.3% - low BMD and 6.7% - osteopenia. There was a downward trend in BMD by 3% per year (with limits ranging from 1.6-4.2% per year). Hysterectomy with or without ovarectomy may be associated with decreased BMD, increased risk of osteoporosis, and fracture. Early diagnosis and individualized treatment can prevent functional decline, complications and maintain quality of life in this group of patients. |
