The antimicrobial resistance of microorganisms has become a serious and a life-threatening public health problem worldwide, thus resulting in a significant economic burden imposed on the healthcare sector. The number of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains has increased dramatically over recent decades due to the widespread use of antibiotic preparations. Despite the emergence of new antibiotics with different mechanisms of action, the new drug development processes commonly take 10 to 17 years, whereas their success rate is less than 10%. |
