Rezumat

The article is dedicated to the analysis the conception of "West" in Ukrainian social and cultural space in Galicia before World War I. The role of Galicia in creation of Ukrainian national identity has long been discussed in the context of formation modern nation in the end of the XIX – the beginning of the XX century. Being the Western boundaries of Ukrainian lands and the Eastern frontier of Austro-Hungarian monarchy which bordered with Russia, Galicia had concentrated different kinds of social and cultural experience. This research is focused on the perception of “West” as the collective intellectual category. The article focuses on different stereotypes and myths connected with ideas of “West” in Galician society. Showing those Western intellectual ideas, political and ideological concepts, which were popular in Galician society, the research tries to investigate their transformations in the Ukrainian political and social background. Article also shows how news from Europe influenced on Galicins’ private life. According to the research socialist, militarist, nationalist, modernist and liberal ideas not only provoked transformations in public thought but also made a great impact on formation the idea of national Ukrainian state.
