The presentation focuses on the motivations to study the English language at linguistic schools and universities. In order to identify these motivations we made a narrative inquiry which is based on the “premise that we understand or make sense of our lives through narrative” in order to understand why Moldovans choose to study English and how this language can influence their life or even change their life. In our research we have chosen the genre of case study so we tries to find out what facts or who motivates students to learn English at the university at the foreign language department if they can easy take a course of a month or two at a language centre and vice versa. Our intention is to find out the role of English language in the students' choice and how they are influenced by the society and other factors to learn this language even if they do not want or need to study it. There are three steps to develop my research: determining the research question (what I will study), developing a rational (why I will study it), and selecting appropriate approach (how I will study it). I always ask myself what is the difference between studying English at a linguistic school and at a university. The research question which formed in my mind was “why do people go to a linguistic school/university to study English, why do the need to know the English language?” In this way I have chosen to investigate this phenomenon, to see the motives, the needs of people to address at a linguistic school. Once we had settled on a research approach, my next step was to prepare a list of interview questions. After a small investigation on the topic how to create a good questionnaire we stopped at Bruce L. Berg’s interview schedule which includes different types of question order, content and style. The sequence of questions was the following: essential questions, extra questions, throw-away questions and probing questions (see the questionnaire in the appendix). The next step in the research was “selecting the participants”. The main criteria for the selection of participants was that they had to be adults, the first year students at the university and the beginning or elementary students at the linguistic school. After we have interviewed five people from the university and five people from the linguistic school we transcribed the interviews. Analyzing the transcription of the interviews we found out that the motivation to study English language differ from student to student at the university on one hand and from students who are studying English at the university to students who are studying English at the linguistic schools. Generally speaking the students who are studying English at the university want to have a better future, to create their future. Analyzing their motives to study English came to the idea that only one person wants to stay in Republic of Moldova and to work as a translator after the graduation. Other students have their plans to go abroad and they know for sure that they will not work as a teacher or a linguist because due to their answer first of all they are studying here because the university is prestigious or their family influenced them to chose this department. Speaking about the linguistic school the situation is totally different here most of the people know for sure where and why they need to use the English language, they know their purpose and they are ready to pay for that. Most of the people are learning the English language at the linguistic school because they need it for work, they say that English is an international language, a business language and if you want to get a good job you must know the English language. It is interesting that one old lady she is about 67 years old mentioned that her motivation to study English is related to her health she is a doctor and she knows that in order to have a good memory you have to read to learn something by heart and so on, that is why she have chosen to learn English language to maintain her memory In this respect we can say that people are influenced by the society and the things around them, even by the whole world. A good example is the English language which became an international one and more and more people can speak and understand it. That is way Moldovans people come to a linguistic school to learn the English language, most of them are here not for pleasure or for their own desire but because there are some social factors which impose them to know English. One of the most popular social factor which influences Moldovans to learn English language and not only this language is the emigration abroad. Young families go abroad in order to find a better life and in fact their children have to adapt to the speech community and they begin to speak English for example. On the other hand relatives who stay in Moldova, as grandparents want to communicate with their grandchildren, so they come to a linguistic center to study English in order to understand what they nephew tells them though skype. Our point of view is that in order to have good specialists who will work in our country after graduation we need to inform better the first years students about the studies and the job they will get after that and to select the most motivate students to study at the Foreign Language Department.
