Background. The relationship between the age and tuberculosis is under-recognized. Susceptibility for tuberculosis is high in elders due to risk factors such: senescence, comorbidities and immunosuppressive treatment. Objective of the study. To assess the clinical evolution of tuberculosis in patients older 55 years. Material and Methods. It was realised a retrospective, selective, descriptive study targeting clinical peculiarities and case-management of 92 patients older than 55 years registered with tuberculosis in the Chisinau city Results. Clinical onset between 1-3 months till diagnosis was in 65 (71%), more than 90 days in 11 (12%), less than 1 month in 10 (12%) and asymptomatic in 6 (5%). Cough presented 65 (71%), sputum 34 (36%), dyspnea 21 (23%), chest pain 17 (18%), hemoptysis 10 (11%). Intoxication syndrome was found in 88 (95%) with anorexia, weight loss, night sweats and general asthenia. Symptomatic patients detected by GPs were 43 (46%) and 12 (13%) by active screening. The specialist detected 15 (16%) symptomatic cases and 10 (18%) by active screening. Came to hospital 12 (13%) cases. Conclusion. The clinical evolution of tuberculosis in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis was characterized by an insidious onset (1-3 months) and the high expressiveness of the clinical signs of the intoxication and bronchopulmonary syndrome. |
