The Metropolitan Church of Moldova and Bucovina has an essential church heritage for knowing the history and culture of Moldova. Icons and iconostasis are sources of documentary information, as well as indisputable testimonies of the spiritual life. Many icons have been lost or destroyed. Few have been preserved and they can still tell us bits and pieces of Moldovan life. In order to recover this information, the icons must be researched and, in particular, preserved. In this sense, at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology within the `AlexandruIoanCuza” University of Iași, since 1993 the Specialization of Sacred Art (initially Cultural Heritage) has been operating, in addition to the didactic activity, the research of icons, iconostasis, books and old documents from church collections. The research of the pieces through physical and chemical investigations led to the recovery of inscriptions that allowed the dating of icons or the finding of donors. Biological investigations have elucidated aspects of the biodegradation and biodeterioration processes of the wood support and the paint layer. In-depth knowledge of the material structure and conservation status of the icons was the prerequisite for the application of appropriate conservation and restoration interventions. As a result of these research, conservation and restoration activities, numerous icons were recovered that were returned to the cult or were capitalized through research, museum exhibition.

Mitropolia Moldovei și Bucovinei deține un patrimoniu bisericesc esențial pentru cunoașterea istoriei și culturii Moldovei. Icoanele și iconostasele sunt surse de informații cu caracter documentar, precum și mărturii incontestabile ale vieții spirituale. Multe icoane s-au pierdut sau au fost distruse. Puține s-au mai păstrat și încă ne mai pot spune crâmpeie din viața moldovenilor. Pentru a recupera aceste informații, icoanele trebuie cercetate și, mai ales, trebuie conservate. În acest sens, la Facultatea de Teologie Ortodoxă din cadrul Universității „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” din Iași, din anul 1993 funcționează specializarea Artă Sacră (inițial Patrimoniu Cultural) în cadrul căreia se desfășoară, pe lângă activitatea didactică, și activitatea de cercetare a icoanelor, iconostaselor, cărților și documentelor vechi din colecțiile bisericești. Cercetarea pieselor prin investigații fizice și chimice a dus la recuperarea de inscripții ce au permis datarea unor icoane sau aflarea donatorilor. Investigațiile biologice au elucidat aspecte ale proceselor de biodegradare și biodeteriorare ale suportului de lemn și ale stratului pictural. Cunoașterea aprofundată a structurii materiale și a stării de conservare a icoanelor a constituit premisa aplicării intervențiilor de conservare și restaurare adecvate. În urma acestor activități de cercetare, conservare și restaurare s-au recuperat numeroase icoane ce au fost redate cultului sau au fost valorificate prin cercetare, expunere muzeală.
