Rezumat

The paper examines the issues of Man-made materiality or the quality state of being of the material culture of man which could be subsumed in the material components that constitutes the instrument for measuring and evaluating the value systems of man and of what society has come to represent. Those major components that make-up such materiality can be said to be intrinsically linked to and embedded in the philosophical and methodological approaches, inherent in the processes and practices of the industrial design profession and discipline. The paper therefore highlighted the meaning and various definitions and descriptions of what the discipline has come to represent. One of such definitions was that it represents that “process of taking something (an object) from its existing state and moving it to a preferred or desired state”. The paper also examined the Meta-design phenomenon and submitted that it represents “an emerging theoretical conceptual framework and methodology which is aimed at nurturing the emergence of new possibilities or prospects of design by engaging in collaborative efforts that emanates from within interdisciplinary “meta-design teams”. The paper also examined the stigmergy phenomenon, and established that, it refers to the mechanism of indirect coordination between agents or actions. A form of self-organization which produces a complex seemingly intelligent network of structures without the need for planning, control or even direct communication between participating agents. From its findings the paper recommends the adaptation of the principles and practice of the stigmergic phenomenon in design and also for its adaptation and application in the development, practice and pedagogy of design education. The “student-centered” and “de-centered learning models” and approaches were also recommended.
