The authors present the key data about a small archaeological excavation conducted in 2013 on a site dating from the period of the Tatar-Mongol domination and situated today on the territory of the village Vorniceni, in a place called Gura Văii. The site was discovered during the digging of a utility hole. Although the archaeological excavation was carried out on just 15 square meters, the researchers found two pottery kilns and two holes of different dimensions used to store the broken pottery and household waste. A large quantity of pottery fragments (over eight thousand), as well as animal bones, were collected from the site. Both pottery kilns consisted from an entrance fi re pit and two chambers – a fi re chamber and a burning chamber – divided by a perforated grill. Like the access holes, the quasi-tronconic-shaped kilns with a diameter from 1,5 to 1,6 metres were built underground, with only a part of the burning chambers being on the surface. The closest analogies to the type of pottery kilns found in Vorniceni are located in Lozova-Oanţa, the area of a rural medieval site from the 14th century. The pottery discovered in Vorniceni belongs to the category known in the special literature as “red-yellow pottery” that was characteristic of the urban and rural settlements under the domination of the Golden Horde. Most of the potteries found in Vorniceni were jugs with a handle and a spout for liquid. Other types of pottery, found much more rarely, were amphora-type pots, bowls and pots-jar. Pottery similar to the pottery discovered in Vorniceni was also found in Lozova-Oanţa, as well as in Costeşti, Orheiul Vechi and so on. |
