Rezumat

The content of the concept translation unit varied and continues to shift depending on theoretical trends and frameworks that shaped the domain of translation studies. Looking into the way translation was defined, we can create a roadmap that the translation unit followed, starting with its liberation from the control of linguistics and ending with its increased call for interdisciplinarity. Due to the modern pragmatic approach, for example, the translator and the researcher become more aware of the importance of the interlocutor’s inferred meaning which can differ from the apparent linguistic sense. To establish the relationship between the text and its constituent parts as translation units would yield a much-needed clarification in translation studies, translation practice and teaching. Determining the length of discourse than can most reliably serve as a translation unit has been a core issue underlying the research in translation and theoretical and empirical models trying to define the concept translation unit. The concept reflects both the long and heated debate between the followers of free and literal translation and the need to instrumentalize it as basis for a scientific approach to translation as product and as process. In this context, the diversity of opinions and approaches render the notion of translation unit of hardly any assistance to teachers of translation, researchers of translation and translators in practice. The issue of the translation unit as an operational concept arises.
