Cluster analysis was used for establishing seismic zoning of the Balkan region. The number
of clusters is defined by the agglomerative method of hierarchal classification. The clusters were
determined, with quantity predefined using k-median method. Calculation of the optimal number
of clusters and quality of cluster relationships were carried out by applying minimum sum squared
error (MSSE). The sampling data was acquired from the Balkan Earthquake Catalog (1900-1990)
for 18 seismic zones. This method has proved to be effective by the presence of high level of
similarity between experimental and cluster modeling seismic zones. Zones for future earthquakes
were determined by discriminant function analysis.
