The theory of sanocreatologic nutrition assumes a special approach to nutrition in the period of diminution of functions, aimed at maintaining and stimulating the processes of anabolism, slowing the decay of the organism’s functions through the selection of structural-energy and sanogenic nutrients. Today, there is no longer any doubt about the need to include in the arsenal of approaches to prevent the premature diminution and maintain mental functions some nutritional ones which provide for including nutrients with proven sanogenic properties regarding components of mental health in the diet (Furdui T. I. et al., 2000, 2011, 2014, 2016). Omega-3- polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs), primarily docosahexaenoic, eicosapentaenoic, arachidonic and alpha-linolenic, are among the most promising sanogenic nutrients for use in the maintenance of mental health, as evidenced by the following experimentally substantiated facts: 1) deficiency of omega-3 PUFAs in the diet leads to an impairment of cognitive functions, in particular, attention, memory, increases the risk of certain mental illnesses – various types of dementia, depression, bipolar affective disorder, provokes vascular disorders increasing the risk of stroke; 2) the relatively high concentration of omega-3 PUFAs in the neocortex during the period of stable functioning of the organism decreases with age, with the development of dementia and other psychiatric disorders; 3) a significant increase in the content of omega-3 PUFAs in the diet is accompanied by an increase of their concentration in the brain and contributes to the correction of cognitive disorders, including under conditions of neurodegeneration; 4) the directional impact of omega-3 PUFAs on the neuronal processes underlying the functioning of the neuropsychic blocks of mental health has been proven. In addition to direct participating in providing the structural bases for the manifestation of mental processes, omega-3 PUFAs, acting as “signal molecules”, influence the synthesis of neurotrophins, in particular, neurotrophic brain factor, nerve growth factor and insulin-like growth factors, participate in stimulation and maintenance of neurogenesis, synaptogenesis and neuritogenesis, the synthesis of neuromodulators, hinder from the synthesis of regulatory molecules associated with dementia. The foregoing shows the advisability of using omega-3- polyunsaturated fatty acids in the system of purposeful maintenance of mental health in the period of diminution of functions.
