The authors present the key data about a small archaeological excavation conducted in the medieval settlement from Vorniceni-Gura Vaii in 2014. In order to unveil completely the archaeological complexes identified in 2013 and to determine the surface of the area with relics, the first sounding was extended and there were traced other three little sections in three different sectors. As a consequence, the two pottery kilns were completely or in a great measure analysed and one more storage pit for ceramic wastes (nr. 3) was discovered. The archaeological material which was discovered consists of ceramics and faunal remains as well as a clay spindle whorl and an iron bloom. The majority of the discovered pottery belongs to the category known in the relevant literature as “red-yellow pottery” that was characteristic of the urban and rural settlements under the domination of the Golden Horde. Most of the potteries found in Vorniceni were jugs with a handle and a spout for liquid. Other types of pottery, found much more rarely, were bowls and pots-jar. Besides the ceramics from the Golden Horde period, there were discovered approximately 20 fragments of glazed and unglazed pots made on the fast wheel, dating from the late Middle Ages (15th-18th centuries). The assortment of glazed vessels contains bowls which were covered inside with enamel of different colours, as well as cups or jugs. Common household pottery processed with black or grey sand slurry, includes mainly jars. The discovery of this ceramics which was processed on the fast wheel, attests in Gura Vaii neighborhood the existence of a second habitation horizon that dates from the period of the existence of the medieval village Vorniceni which was attested for the first time on April 25, 1420. |
