The article presents findings of the Sântana de Mureş-type Cerneahov type settlement from Trinca-Valea Copacului (Edineţ district), brought about by the prospect research, carried out late last year after the execution of autumn plowing. Reported in 1999, the archaeological object concerned is located about 1 km south-west of the village, on the left slope of the Draghişte river valley. The site has dimensions of about 0,25×0,40 km, being crossed from west to east by a dale called by the locals Valea Copacului. Inventory pieces found on the surface of the settlement include a silver coin from the reign of Emperor Vespasian (69-79 AD), a loom burned clay weighing, three spindles whorls, one of which is bi- truncated and two are made of pottery fragments, and seven rub stones of hone, including a whetstone with a perforation for hanging. Gathered ceramics is numerous and varied, including the main categories, specific to the Sântana de MureşCerneahov culture, namely pots modeled by hand, wheel-made vessels of fine or coarse paste, as well as Roman import vases. Two pieces of flint and a few fragments of pottery decorated with alveolar belts, attributed to the Neolithic and the Early Iron Age, were also recovered on the surface of the site. Based on the discovered remains, especially pottery, the settlement of the Sântana de Mureş-Cerneahov type from Trinca-Valea Copacului is dated in the IVth century AD. |
