Rezumat

In this article we analyze the role of self-esteem and its level in adolescent athletes. The adolescence period represents an important stage in the development of the future adult, and important factors such as: self-esteem, the level of stress, the perception of one;s own performance and value, relations with the family and the sports team, can lead to various types of maladaptive behaviors. In the case of adolescent athletes, prolonged periods of training, injuries, the emotions of competitions, the relationship with the members of the sports team, can negatively influence the level of self-esteem, but also that of performance. A number of 30 teenage girls practicing aerobic gymnastics participated in the study. Data collection on the level of self-esteem of the participants was carried out by using the Self-Esteem Scale developed by the American sociologist Dr. Morris Rosenberg. The results of the research indicated a low level of self-esteem in the participants, which may also indicate the lack trust in their own worth and may have negative implications on performance, but also on the general well-being.
